Margaret looked up expectantly as Becker emerged from a patient’s room. To her utter surprise, he was still smiling. Armed with her clipboard, she marched toward him. “Mister Brown is in Room 2,” she said, confident that he was about to resume his usual bickering. Brown was almost as cantankerous as Becker, and the two had a begrudging respect for each other. “He’s here for a prostate exam.”
John paused in his stride. Margaret grinned. She had him now! But then he shrugged and picked up Brown’s information from the box hanging on the door. “Let’s get the probing over with.”
Margaret’s eyes widened in surprise. “What did you do last night?!” she cried.
Becker grinned, actually grinned, and his eyes sparkled. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“Yes, I would, especially considering how many fine ladies I have tried to send your way! You’ve rebuffed every one of them! Who did you -- “ She stopped and cleared her throat. “Who is actually making you smile?”
Becker just grinned down at her, winked, opened the door to Mister Brown and his prostate exam, and closed it in her face. Margaret huffed and glared at the door. She’d get the answer out of him one way or another! Her mind still puzzling over who the mysterious woman could be, she returned to her desk and had just picked up the sign in sheet when Linda finally dragged herself through the door.
“Sorry I’m late, Margaret,” she called both cheerily and tiredly, “but you would not believe the night I had last night!”
Margaret’s eyes shot wide and round again. She looked from Linda’s exhausted, thin frame to the closed door behind which John Becker, of all people, was merrily giving the one man she knew who could be as irritating as himself a prostate exam. “No!” she breathed.
“Oh, yeah!” Linda grinned with enthusiasm.
Margaret’s gaze shifted back to Linda. “You and Becker?!”
“Oh, yeah! You’d never believe the energy that guy has when his mouth is too full to bitch!”
Margaret’s mouth dropped open. Her clipboard hit the floor and clattered loudly in the suddenly silent office. “My . . . My word!” she exclaimed upon finally finding her voice.
Linda’s grin just got bigger. “I made him holler a lot more than just that last night!”
The room seemed to spin around Margaret, and she sank into her chair. The sign she’d seen a beggar holding this morning had to be right after all: if John Becker and Linda were coming together, the world had to be coming to an end! It was the only possible explanation! She buried her face into her hands and moaned.
“No,” Linda corrected. “It was way more like . . . “ She let out a long, low moan.
Margaret was still sunk low in her chair when she heard Becker emerge from Brown. Margaret looked up and saw John’s and Linda’s gazes meet. Linda smiled; heat flooded Becker’s face. Margaret groaned again. “That’s it! The world is coming to an end!”
