Cam edged into the backyard. After the hustle and bustle of his busy day and all the loud noises of city life, it seemed almost eerily quiet. Lily had not yet come home, but Mitch was here. He’d seen his husband’s car parked out front. Very soon he found him, his red head bent over another smaller head with a red comb.
Cam smiled, his hands clasping together before him as he gazed at Mitch and the new chicken. As much as he’d hated taking care of the last bird, one look at his husband and his new pet told him he’d done the right thing. Mitch was never this peaceful. He crept closer and was surprised when Mitch’s eyes popped open. He wasn’t asleep; he was just that much at peace.
Cam sank down beside him and the bird. Mitch gestured, offering for him to pet the chicken, but Cam shook his head, waved a hand in the air, and used his other to caress the back of Mitch’s where his fingers were nestled into the chicken’s soft feathers. They sat together in silence and peace, all the stress of their days having vanished in the wake of love.
