The run had not calmed the beast howling within her as it usually did. She had ran through the whole forest, all the way to the village, and back again. She’d only returned here because she’d felt the need to see her most cherished friend, who she was coming quickly to think of her as her once-in-a-lifetime mate. It was a cold night; they had only the fireplace by which to warm themselves and the cabin.
Though she still panted hard and her heartbeat thundered loudly, threatening to wake Snow, Red was beginning to feel the chill. It seemed to seep through the air into her very bones. Shuddering, she climbed back into bed. Snow turned over suddenly, reaching out to her in her sleep. Her arms wrapped around her, and she pulled her as close as a second skin, murmuring in her pleasant dreams as she did so.
The cold left Red immediately. A warmth enveloped her that felt sweeter and warmer than the sun on a fine Spring day, just as the sunlight is beginning to chase away the end of Winter. Snow was chasing away her Winter, Red realized, and snuggled in, content to spend the night.
