“Isn’t it wonderful?” Rose whispered excitedly, looking down at the friend she clutched in her arms.
Dorothy paused; Rose froze. She should have waited until Dorothy had left her bedroom before talking to her friends. Slowly, one eyebrow arched demandingly, Dorothy turned back to her. “Rose, you’re not talking to that stuffed bear, are you?”
Rose hid the plushie behind her back too late. She knew Dorothy didn’t believe her as she swung her hands carelessly back and forward, having dropped the bear on the bed behind her. “Of course not, Dorothy. I was just saying, ‘Isn’t it wonderful?’, and I really do think it is. Don’t you?”
“As much as I know I’m going to regret this, what is so wonderful, Rose?”
“Having friends. I think it’s wonderful we’re all going to be great friends!”
Dorothy saw something in her new friend’s eyes that reminded her of herself. Rose was lonely too, and like herself, she’d probably never had any real friends growing up. “Yes. Yes, it is.”
Rose picked up the bear again after Dorothy had left. She was still beaming. “Of course I love you guys, but it’s going to be wonderful having real friends at last!”
