“I don’t believe you’d rather study for that stupid test than go out with me!” Haley exclaimed, pouting. “You were never so boring before!”
Her statement had instantly snatched her mother’s attention, but neither Haley nor Dylan noticed. He stepped up, taking his girlfriend’s hands in his. “It’s not just about the test,” he said quietly as Claire pretended to fold laundry. “It’s about making myself better for you. It’s about making a future for us. I don’t want you to ever have to worry about a thing, Haley, when you choose me. I can’t offer you the kind of life Arvin can. I can’t be a fancy professor or travel the world.”
“You could totally travel the world,” she interjected, causing her mother, still unnoticed by them both, to roll her eyes. “You can still be a musician, Dylan.”
“I am a musician,” he said and kissed her hands, “but that’s not going to provide the kind of future I want with you. This will. But for me to actually pass, I have to get my grades right.”
Haley caved. “I guess I can see your point.”
“We can go to the movies next weekend, and I’ll take you dancing and out to dinner. But I’ve got to pass this test first.”
“I could quiz you.”
He shook his head. “We both know where that will lead.” He released her hands and cupped her beautiful face in his palms instead. “I love you, Haley, and because of that, I’ve got to get this right.” He kissed her, then turned and headed out of the Dunphy house.
Haley watched him go. “I don’t believe it,” she whispered, still a little shocked.
“Me neither!” Claire exclaimed, revealing her interest.
“MOM!” Haley shrieked, but even as she stomped upstairs, Claire had to smile. Maybe Dylan was better than she gave him credit for. He had certainly changed! She’d always thought he was rather mindless, but at some point while he was loving her daughter, he had changed. He had matured. Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing after all if Haley ended up with Dylan; she could certainly do worse. Claire smiled and continued her chores, feeling more confident about her daughter’s future than she had in a long time.
