“You know,” April said gently, her eyes lifting to meet the kind, old, and wise gaze of the Turtles’ Sensei, “I could make you a new robe.” Or buy you one, she thought.
Splinter’s gaze fell from hers onto his tattered, old robes. There were torn places from battles and from getting caught in tight areas while scavenging for everything from food and medicine to toys for his sons. There were stains that were nearly as old as the robe: tomato stains from Mikey’s first attempts at cooking, traces of blood from Raphael’s first fisticuff and several battles that had followed, and others. There were even burn marks from electric wires and other gadgetry that had shorted out while Donatello had been working on it. Even Leonardo had left his mark on his father’s robe in a tiny slice at the very bottom of the robe’s hem, which had happened the first time he had managed to tag his father with his katana.
Splinter smiled. His tail whisked. “Thank you,” he said humbly, “but I would much rather just get this one clean.”
April smiled, nodded, poured more bleach into the water, and continued to help him scrub.
