Alex looked up as her father ran through the house, a rake still in his hand. “Phil!” Claire called on him before she could stop him. “What are you doing with that in the house?!” Honestly, Alex thought, lowering her gaze and trying to return her attention to her homework, it was bad enough they were always having to watch Luke to make sure he didn’t bring the house. Watching her own father for the same purpose was something she shouldn’t have to do, but had her whole life.
“I’m sorry,” Phil bubbled. “I just got so excited! The leaves are ready! Don’t you want to come?”
“No,” Claire spoke distinctly, making a face at her husband.
“Alex? Care to join us, sweetheart?”
“I’m busy,” Alex murmured, her gaze on her term paper.
“Here you go, sweetheart.”
She accepted the mug of hot chocolate from her mother with a muttered, “Thanks.”
“You’d rather have a pile of chocolate than a pile of leaves?” her father asked in feigned disbelief.
“Any day of the week,” Alex murmured, still not looking up at him.
Phil shrugged. “Your loss, ladies.” He grabbed the mugs of cocoa Claire had made for himself and Luke and ran back outdoors. She could tell he’d left the door slightly ajar because they were able to hear the two men in their immediately family laughing and joking around, then screaming shortly thereafter with delight as they pounced into the piles of leaves. She shook her head, but a smile crossed her lips. His whoops and hollers soon had her looking up and watching through the crack in the door as he played with her brother.
“Men are something else, aren’t they?” her mother asked, shaking her head in disbelief.
She started to close the door, but Alex stopped her. “Don’t,” she said, lowering her pencil and sipping her cocoa. “Leave it open.” They stayed where they were, smiling as they calmly sipped their cocoa. Some adults would never be grown ups, Alex reflected, but she loved her father just the way he was. Luke had his moments too.
