Mitch walked into their bedroom after tucking Lily in for the night and stopped in surprise. He’d heard a soft, telltale, but muffled sound when he’d first entered the room; now one glance at Cam bustling about and avoiding eye contact with him confirmed his suspicions. Cam had put on a brave front all night. He hadn’t even acted nearly as upset as Mitch had expected him to when he’d made the mistake of donating his clown costume, something for which he’d feared Cam might never forgive him. But now that the day was over, their friend revealed to be their enemy, and his costume safely returned, Cam’s mask was beginning to fall away. Mitch had just caught him crying, he knew though Cam said nothing as he laid down.
Laying beside him, Mitch started to take him in his arms. He stopped when he felt something rubbery sticking out from underneath Cam’s pillow. He sighed, knowing it was his Fizbo mask. He was just going to have to learn to accept his husband’s clown. He could do it. He loved everything else about Cam; he could accept the clown. He kissed the back of Cam’s head. “I’m sorry, baby.”
