Raphael sneered at his brothers hugging. Their latest battle had been a close call, and for a moment, they’d feared they were losing both Mikey and Don, but they were heroes. There was supposed to be damn moments like those in their lives. Anger choked down Raphael’s previous fear. “It’s a Kodak moment,” he muttered.
Don and Mike pushed slightly apart from one another and exchanged a look. “Come here,” Mikey said as the younger brothers reached out together, grabbed the edges of Raphael’s shell, and dragged him into their embrace. Raphael stilled in surprise as warmth and love washed over him.
They hugged more tightly, and slowly, Raph returned their tender embrace. Maybe they were supposed to have close calls in their line of destiny, but today’s had been too close. He didn’t want to ever face losing any one of his brothers, though he knew he would have to one night. Unshed tears glistened in his dark eyes, but neither of his brothers called him on the betraying liquid.
Leonardo and Master Splinter stepped up to the trio. Their Sensei started to clear his voice but stopped Leonardo took his hand and then, his hand still in his, wrapped his arms around two of his brothers’ shells. Slowly, almost as heistant as his angry son, Splinter released Leonardo’s hand to wrap his own wiry, furry arms around his charges who so much more. These young turtles were his sons, the only children he’d ever have or need. His tail whipped at the air before coming to a resting spot and gently touching Raphael’s ankle where it hovered near the ground.
Raphael looked, out of the corner of his eyes, at his father in surprise. Master Splinter was always telling him how the “weaker” emotions were nothing to be ashamed of, but it was rare he saw his Sensei actually embrace them himself. He closed his eyes and let the warmth of his family’s love wash over him. It was an awesome feeling, one that made every battle they’d endured worth it.
Thank God, he thought, or Whoever was Up There looking after them that he had not lost his brothers today. The mere thought still choked him with emotions to which he didn’t want to surrender or give a name. He was the first also to break up the moment. Though a part of him wished he could keep standing there hugging his family forever, he refused to show any weakness even to them, and they had a Shredhead to track down.
He cleared his own throat as he stepped away. “Now that that’s over with -- “
Leonardo looked up and met his gaze. For a moment, he thought his older brother might force him back into the hug, but instead Leo nodded after a moment’s thought. “Yes. We’ll find him, Raphael,” he said, his eyes still holding his gaze steady, “and we’ll stop him.”
Raph nodded. That was, after all, what they did -- that and love one another.
