Dorothy glared at Blanche, clearly aghast. “How much did you have to pay?”
“To keep Professor Webster from putting your picture under ‘shameless’ in the dictionary.”
Blanche glowered at her. “Ah’d rather have mah picture underneath ‘shameless’ than ‘dateless’!”
“The man’s wife has barely been dead a week, Blanche, and she was your friend!”
“Precisely, Dorothy. We had an agreement that whichevah one o’ us went first, if th’ other was single, she’d take care o’ our man! Ah’m holdin’ to that agreement. Bill doesn’t need to be lonely.”
“He doesn’t need a hot tramp either!”
“Bettah this hot tramp than any o’ th’ othah women who’re linin’ up just to get to his money!”
“And that’s not an issue for you?”
“No, Dorothy! Ah’m doin’ this for a friend!” Blanche rolled her eyes, threw her hands up into the air, and stormed off.
Dorothy sank, alone, onto the couch. She’d never understand Blanche. Dating was something she only did when she was seeking to make a connection with someone she could possibly love. The problem, of course, was that she loved someone who would never consider dating, let alone loving, a woman. Dorothy sighed, left alone again.
