Sometimes it felt good to hide behind her glasses. It felt good to pretend she was just a normal girl with everyday, normal problems. This, however, wasn’t one of those days. She’d been almost itching for a good fight when she heard the sirens start in the distance. She wasted no time in finding a place where she could whip her glasses off her face and take off her “regular girl” clothes.
Soon she was speeding toward the scene. She was rescuing citizens, doing what she did best, fighting the good fight, this time against flames, and saving lives. She was being Supergirl, not Kara Danvers. She had lives to focus on saving -- instead of doing the impossible and trying to make a decision between her two very best friends in the world.
Among those lives she saved were two best friends huddling together underneath a stairwell, each trying to protect the other from flames that were closing in all around them. As she carried them out of the burning building, Kara realized that those friends could not be separated, just as she could not bear to be seperated from her best friends. For just a moment, she closed her eyes against the tears that welled in Kara Danvers’ eyes. She had her answer: She couldn’t choose between them.
She might think she loved Jimmy and Wynn in a way stronger than friendship, but she couldn’t risk anything happening to those friendships. The answer, in a way, was simple and yet was also one of the most difficult decisions she’d ever made: Instead of choosing one, she had to choose neither. She had to keep them as friends only or she might lose them forever, and that was one thing she couldn’t live with.
Screams resounded again. Kara reopened her eyes, and Supergirl was off once more. There were lives more important than hers, but nothing would ever be more important to her than her two dearest friends in all the world. She had to keep them as friends. Love would come somewhere else one day when she was ready, perhaps from the stars as she had, but wherever it came from, she couldn’t allow that kind of love from Wynn or Jimmy. Friends only, she thought both grimly and determinedly, but friends forever.
