“You’ve been staring at my wings all day,” Steve’s voice muttered next to Natasha’s ear as they headed out together after the press conference.
She glanced at him and lifted her lithe, muscular shoulders into an innocent shrug. “They’re cute,” she whispered back, her Russian accent thickening.
He raised an eyebrow at her. It was rare for Natasha to use such a word as “cute” and even more rare for her to become embarrassed when caught doing something, as he knew, from her accent suddenly thickening, that she was now. One of the other guys would have teased her on it, but he was more concerned about why she thought the wings, which were meaningful and further represented justice in his uniform, were cute. “Cute?” he repeated questioningly.
She shrugged again. “Well, yes.”
“They’re not there to be cute, Nat.”
“They may not be, Steve,” she countered, suddenly stepping into his pathway, “but they are.” She lifted her hands and ran her fingers along his wings.
“They’re -- “ he started to argue but stopped, his tongue suddenly feeling tied, when she repeated the maneuver.
“I know they’re important to you. They wouldn’t be on your uniform otherwise. But they’re cute to me, and to other women.”
“I don’t care -- “
“Hush,” she said, stroking his wings, just above his ears, a third time. Then she dropped to his ears and caressed them through his spandex. His mouth had been open to further protest, but he suddenly forgot what he was going to say. She smiled, kept caressing his ears, leaned in, and suddenly kissed him, leaving him even more speechless as she swiftly turned and headed after the others.
Steve blinked when Tony clasped his shoulder. “I told you the chicks would dig it if you’d wing it.” He grinned at his own joke.
Steve slowly shook his head. “Women,” he muttered. “I didn’t understand them before, and I certainly don’t know.” He walked with Tony toward the rest of their team, but as he remembered Natasha calling his wings cute and caught her eye once more, he found himself grinning like a schoolboy. He didn’t understand them, but he most certainly also didn’t mind their attention. Maybe his wings being cute wasn’t such a bad thing after all.
