He still remembered how she used to watch him with a quiet, sweet smile upon her beautiful face. She had never really feared him, not until Storybrooke, but now when she looked upon him, there was a flair of anger and, he feared, even hatred in the lovely eyes which had once cast such kind and loving looks upon him. He could barely stand to face her now.
Rumplestiltskin raked his fingers through his hair as his face twisted with his efforts not to cry. It was all so unfair! He had been so close to having everything he’d wanted, as had Regina. They had planned this world perfectly, and he had planned it far more than she had. Her only desire had been to end Snow and Charming, and now she’d become friends with the two heroic fools. His desires had been so much more. He had found his son, and lost him, and now he had lost the only other person he had ever truly loved.
He should start again. He would with any of his other plans. That was how he had always come away a winner: He had done and done and redone however many times it took until he’d finally come out victorious. There was only one major problem with casting the spell again: It required sacrificing the thing he loved the most, which of course, was the very person for whom he was so tempted to redo everything.
He trembled inside with the painful knowledge that surfaced. He couldn’t recast the spell. He couldn’t redo this plan. There was only one thing he could do if he ever hoped to regain Belle’s love, not to mention her trust: He had to change. He had to change not the world, which, in the end, was so much easier to change but himself. He had to improve upon himself. He had to become a new man, a man somehow worthy of her love. And damn it, if he didn’t know how!
Tears streaked silently down his face as he sat alone in the home he’d built for himself and his one true Queen. She would never rule, not beside him or over anyone. She was too kind, too gentle, but no matter how hard he’d tried to keep himself from doing it, he still loved her. He loved her, and if he was ever going to be able to be with her again, he was going to have to change. Damn it, but it was so unfair! It really was so much easier to change the world.
And that, Rumplestiltskin realized, was his greatest flaw: Despite everything, despite all the power and magic he had accumulated over the centuries, despite everything he had become and all he had done, he was still hardly more than a weak man at heart. The thought of trying to change himself was terrifying, and yet . . . For his Belle, it would be worth it. Anything, even dying, would be worth it just to see her smile one last time with love upon her beautiful face for his lowly hide. He had to change; that was all there was to it.
