Wynn watched her hands as Kara played with a piece of metal. She didn’t often use her superpowers to do mundane things, but right now, they were both bored. He was pretending to code as he watched her out of the corner of his eyes and they both waited for her next mission to appear over the wave lengths. She was practically glowing today, and it was a pleasure to see her so happy even if he wasn’t the cause.
He’d never be the cause, he knew. No matter how much he loved her, adored her, even, at times, worshipped her from afar, Kara would never see him as anything much more than a friend. They had tried dating, and it just didn’t work for them no matter how strong he felt for her. He also couldn’t allow his affections to come between him and Kara again or between himself and his other, new best friend, Jimmy.
He couldn’t act on his feelings, but that didn’t mean Wynn couldn’t dream. He watched Kara bend the metal and reshape it. He watched her break off a piece of it and curl the two ends together. He watched as she formed a heart out of something simple and hard, something that he doubted very few other people, if any, could see being used for artistic purposes. He watched her shape the heart and knew that it wasn’t meant for him. It was intended for that blasted alien Prince, yet another guy in Kara’s life who didn’t deserve her as Supergirl or, and even better yet, as Kara.
Wynn smiled secretly as he admitted another truth to himself. The Prince wouldn’t stay long. He’d be pulled away by royal duties or by differences in their beliefs and values. He wouldn’t hold Kara’s heart for long. She’d see through him and send him packing. She’d cry then, probably need his shoulder again as a friend and perhaps as a brother figure, but she’d move on in the end.
She’d move on. Mon-El would move on. But he would still be here. No matter how many boyfrieds Kara went through, no matter how many inferior men she let break her heart, he’d still be here, still loving her and even, at times, still worshipping her from afar. He’d always be here. That was a benefit of letting her see him still as just a friend and keeping his feelings to himself. He’d always love her, and he’d always have her shining light in his life, even if it was as nothing more than a friend.
He was beaming, lost in her reverie, as she reached out for another piece of wire. She looked up at him suddenly, her beautiful eyes full of intent curiosity. “What?”
He turned his sweet smile into an innocent-looking grin. “Nothing -- “ he started to say, but J’onn’s voice crackling over their intercoms broke up their conversation just in time. He nodded, turning to his computer console as she took flight. He’d still be here when she got back. He’d always be here for his Supergirl.
