Cordelia tried to walk with her usual calm dignity and seductive grace as she entered the Hyperion, but her feet tripped over something invisible on the second step down into the lobby. She stumbled, her arms flailing, and started to fall. Angel was there in a heartbeat, as swift as ever, his strong arms steadily supporting her. He looked anxious as he waited for the details of her latest vision.
Yet she had no details to give him. His handsome face seemed to swing in front of her blurry eyes as her head buzzed not from a vision but from too much to drink that night as she’d striven hard to forget all about the jobs she couldn’t get, the parents she couldn’t please, the people back home who she could no longer impress, and most of all, the man she couldn’t have, the same man who was holding her now, and the same one who she’d been secretly lusting after ever since the very first time she’d spied him in Sunnydale.
“Hello, ssssalty goodnessss.”
Angel’s nose crinkled. “How much have you had to drink?”
“Nnnnnot enouf.” She lifted a finger, raised and lowered several other fingers, and then just waved her hand in the air. “Doessssn’t matter. It’ssss nevvver enouf.” She reached higher up and draped her arm around Angel’s neck, her fingers curling into the collar of his dark jacket.
“What do you mean?” he questioned. “Cordelia, what’s wrong with you?”
“Like yooo don’t knnnnow.” She suddenly grasped his neck and pulled him down. At the same time, she leaned up in his arms and touched her lips to his. Her lips were powerful and possessive, or at least, that’s what he’d tell himself later as they kissed long and deep, her tongue thrusting into his hot mouth. When she finally released him and fell back, she actually licked her lips as she gazed up at him through the glaze in her hazel eyes.
“Yupppp.” She patted his pale, shocked cheek. “Jusssst assss good assss I knew it’d beeee. Now let me go. U don’t want me. U want Bufffffffie.” She stood up and pulled herself free of his grasp with as much dignity and control as she could manage.
Angel watched her go, not moving through his shock. Then he stole a look around the lobby, ascertaining that the guys had left for the night. “No,” he whispered, “that’s where you’re wrong.” But she’d have to keep believing that. If he ever so much as kissed her again, Angelus was bound to come out, because being with Cordelia, allowing himself to openly love and being loved by his wonderful, gorgeous Seer would surely be the very perfect bliss he could never have.
He shook his head and hurried out of the Hyperion, leaving Cordelia alone. As he hurried in search of the nearest fight, he brushed a thumb across his lips and tasted the scent and feel that lingered on his mouth. Definitely salty goodness.
