It was after the funeral that the caped hero finally set down on the ground beside the freshly turned earth. It was where the world could not see him that the planet’s hero finally let his tears flow. He should have been here, he thought, instead of out pursuing heroic endeavors. He rescued strangers every day. He saved the world, it seemed, almost once every day. Yet he had failed the man who had always meant the most to him.
He failed all the people, Clark realized, tears streaming, who meant the most to him. He’d failed his parents long ago. He visited their graves often; now he had another grave to add to that growing list, another failure to save a life he’d most treasured. Only, this time, he’d never even told the person how he’d felt. He’d never once whispered the words, “I love you”.
Would that love have been enough? he wondered through his sorrow. But he’d never know, just like, if only he had looked a single time at Lex’s casket with his X-ray vision, he would have known it was empty. The man he loved still lived, but he’d never know how much he cared.
