“Easy,” Xena’s voice was soft and coaxing as she swam up behind her. “You don’t have to do a thing. I’ll take care of everything.” If she didn’t know her so well, Gabrielle wouldn’t even hear the tiny hint of remorse in the warrioress’ voice as she gently dabbed the sponge into the water and then onto her bloody cut. “We’ll have you fixed up in no time.”
She let her clean her wounds. She allowed her to take her time bathing her back and washing her short, blonde hair. She waited patiently until Xena gently turned her in the water. Her face was still swelling from the day’s fight and the warlord’s lucky, sneaky punch, but she could still see her lover wince when she looked at her.
“I chose this life,” Gabrielle said, bobbing in the water as she slid closer to her.
“You chose it for the wrong reasons -- “ Xena started, looking away.
“No. I chose it for the best reason anyone can choose anything.” She reached out, took her hands, and pulled her closer. She tugged on her hands until Xena finally looked back up at her. “No regrets,” she said, “as long as you love me,” and then slowly, tenderly, she kissed her heroine, pledging to her yet again with her lips, tongue, and body what even her words were never enough to say properly.
She had no regrets. She would not even if the warlord had killed her today. She will not when the day comes and she dies. She’s let love dictate her entire life, and no matter what anybody else does, says, or thinks, Gabrielle knows she hasn’t made a mistake. As long as she has Xena, as long as she has her love, her life is perfect, even if there are a few stumbles and fists along the way.
