The other six of the gambler’s companions had already pulled out when he announced, “All or nothing.” His opponent flicked a nervous glance around the table, but he wasn’t about to back down now. They had him, and as they waited for Ezra to deal the final blow, JD snuck a look around the table himself.
It was a year ago today that he had decided to spend what little savings his mother had struggled to keep for him to come out West. She had wanted him to go to school, to get an education, and make a better man of himself than what his ancestors, both her father and his own, had been. The money simply had not been enough. It had been a gamble to come out West.
Everybody had thought he’d been making the wrong choice, but sitting here at this table tonight, looking at his companions who were more than companions, friends who were more than friends, he knew he had made the right decision. He had bet all or nothing and had received everything in return: a home, a unique education, a family, and a life of which he and his mother could be proud.
