They have done this a multitude of times over the years. Leonardo well remembers when Master Splinter first brought him to this place where the waters are deep within this chamber yet neither murky or filled with nasty things as they are in other places. This is the closest they have to a lake here in the city.
He remembers the time on April’s farm when Master Splinter was missing. He’d first known it was time to do something when he’d found the lake and witnessed the ripples cast by the wind’s invisible hand.
Sensei throws the first pebble, creating five ripples. He passes the next to his eldest son and gestures for him to take his turn. Leonardo does, and his eyes widen in surprise as not five but seven ripples are cast from his pebble. Instead of taking another turn, Splinter places the remaining pebbles into Leonardo’s hand, closing his fingers around them. “It is time, my son, for you to lead.”
Leonardo wakes with his mouth open in cries of denial and sweat covering his body. He sits in the darkness and cries silent tears. But their father is gone. It is time for him to lead.
