Every once in a while, he lets himself imagine what could have happened if she had stayed. He allows himself the rare treat of pretending he is not alone, of pretending she could have loved him. Had he been able to relinquish his hold on her baby brother, perhaps the girl could have learned to love him. Perhaps she could have seen through his beautiful, terrifying exterior to his heart within. Perhaps she could have been his Queen. Perhaps he would not have had to exist for so long so utterly alone.
But it is all just that of course: it is his imaginings, figments that were never to be and never were, a paradise he’d longed for but was never given. Eventually, his Goblins’ squabbling breaks through Jareth’s reverie, reminding him again of the awful, horrible truth. He is a King with endless power. He can do anything, but he cannot force a woman to love him, even the woman he loves, and he cannot leave this kingdom without being granted that rarest of treasures, true love. He strikes the nearest Goblin, sending him sailing, but derives no pleasure. The truth is, without Sarah’s love, he is forever condemned.
