He knew better than to look down as he pulled out of the driveway, gravel spinning underneath the Impala’s wheels. He knew he’d be lost with just one look, so he glanced at the backseat instead which was supposed to be safe. His older boy was smarter, more experienced. He knew the risks. He had seen the Werewolves attacking the sheep last night and understood why, no matter how many times John tried, they could never settle.
He was caught off guard by the stormy look in Dean’s eyes. Those thunderclouds accentuated the cries around him. John finally stopped. “Can’t we keep him, Daddy, pleeeease?” Sammy wailed beside him. “I don’t want to leave him!” John didn’t have to look down to see his son’s tears.
“Fine,” he muttered. “Fine.” He popped open the door. The sheepdog’s cries changed to happy barks, and Sammy squealed as they took off again.
John’s eyes met Dean’s. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” he tried to snarl but couldn’t quite manage it. His boys were both grinning now. There was still one thing that mattered more to John than his boys’ protection even if he couldn’t place it first; that was their happiness.
