The night was long, and it had been hours since the time his father had said he would return. He’d still come, Dean knew, his eyes sliding closed; he was just running late. He shook himself awake again, took another sip of soda that no longer tasted good, and refocused his eyes on Sammy. He had an important job.
“You always have an important job,” a kindly voice said, “but it’s time to sleep, Dean. You can’t protect Sammy if you’re too tired to fight.”
“I can’t protect him if I’m asleep either.”
Gentle hands pulled up the old, ratty blanket around Dean’s thin shoulders. “I can protect you both,” his friend said. “Sleep.” Dean’s eyes slid closed.
His father may not be here, but his friend was. He was safe. Sammy was safe. He could sleep without fear. His friend would wake him, after all, if anything happened. He once more thought silent thanks for a friend who was stronger than any man and who could walk through walls, appear only to him, and always helped him fight the monsters and keep them safe. His father was often gone, but his friend was always there. Dean smiled and dozed.
