“You did what?!” Rogue asked dryly, unable to believe her ears.
“I made a -- “ Hank started to explain again.
Rogue’s eyes flashed wildly between the Scientist and Remy. “An’ what if it doesn’t work?!”
“My inventions rarely -- “
“Yeah, yeah, yoah inventions rarely fail! But this is Remy’s life we’re talkin’ about here!”
“Oui,” Remy interjected, “so you’d think Remy would get a say in -- “
“Shut up, Swamp Rat!”
“Chere -- “
“What if it breaks?!” she demanded, her green eyes narrowing angrily in on Hank.
“Rogue, of all the reactions I might have expected, -- “
“What?! You thought Ah’d just jump his bones an’ risk killin’ him?! Hank, that’s part o’ th’ very reason why Ah stayed away from th’ X-Men for as long as Ah did! Everytime Ah’m around Remy, he gets hurt!”
“Chere -- “
“Not now, Cajun!”
Hank’s eyes carefully met Rogue’s. He lowered his glasses so that she could see directly into his blue eyes. “Life without risk may be surviving, Rogue, but is it really living?”
“That’s it! Damn it, this is my life! This is de chance I’ve been waitin’ for forever! I’ve got a say in this!” Remy grabbed the sealed object from Hank’s outstretched hand and grabbed Rogue’s gloved hand in his other.
“Remy -- “ she started again.
“De man’s got a point, chere! I’m tired o’ not livin’! I felt more alive dat one time you kissed me dan I ever have before, an’ I’m willin’ to risk anythin’ to know what it’s like to love you!”
“But what if -- “
“If it doesn’t work,” he said, tightening his grip on her hand, “if I feel your skin at any point, I’ll say somethin’ -- “
“But what if Ah can’t stop it?”
“Your control is way better dan it used to be. You’ll stop.”
“I can always listen in telepathically and stop you if need be -- “
“Th’ Hell you will, girl!” Rogue exclaimed heatedly, flashing Jean an angry glare. But then she looked back at Hank. “Hold on, Remy,” she said, whisking her hand out of his as she could have done at any time. He paused, looked at his empty hand, and then looked forlornly back as Rogue returned to Hank. He huffed, expecting more argument, but stopped when his beautiful chere threw her clothed arms around Hank and hugged him tightly but carefully.
“Thank you,” she whispered. “Only you’d think of a full body condom.”
He shrugged after returning her hug. It seemed to Remy that the blue fur on his face darkened a little. “I only do not know why,” he apologized, pushing his glasses back up onto the bridge of his nose, “the idea did not occur to me earlier.”
Rogue giggled. “‘Cause you’re not used t’ thinkin’ ‘bout sex. That’s why.” She winked at him. “Maybe you should take a little o’ yoah own advice an’ live a little, Big Blue.” She placed a gloved hand on his cheek and kissed the back of that hand. “Thank you,” she said again, then flew from him to grab Gambit and fly to the nearest bed.
“Hey! That’s my room!” Ororo protested sharply for Rogue had flown straight up into the attic.
“Danks for de loan, Stormy,” Remy called back to her.
She laughed and let her eyes roll, a habit she’d picked up from the younger X-Men. “I can always change the sheets,” she murmured, and the sun shone outside with its most brilliant rays, reaching into the attic and giving Remy and Rogue a glorious, golden bath as they made love for the first time.
