He walked up, slid his arm around his girlfriend’s shoulders, and looked in on the sleeping kid who he hoped would one day be his son. “He’s fine,” he whispered into Paige’s air, kissing her ear.
“I know,” she murmured, “but I can’t help worrying about him. I worry about him every day, and now he’s using a knife and getting kidnapped and -- “
“ -- and getting away from the kidnapper,” Tim interjected. “He proved just how capable he is of taking care of himself today, Paige.”
“Which worries me even more in a way. He’s a wonder. He amazes me every day, but I -- I don’t want him to ever think he’s not going to need me or to get in over his head because he thinks he’s ready to do everything the other kid geniuses do.”
Tim pulled her out of the doorway, turned her around, and looked closely into her eyes. “He will never not need you,” he told her solemnly. “You’re his mother. He’s always going to need you. Have you looked around you at work lately? You’ve got four grown geniuses who desperately need a mother. Of course your genius is always going to need his mother.”
He kissed her lips, almost as though to say that he needed her too. She smiled but sighed as he lifted his lips from hers. He rubbed her arms. “I almost wish -- “
“What?” he asked, closing the door. “That I was staying with you? You’ll be fine. If I had any doubt of that, I wouldn’t leave, but you’re going to be fine. You’re going to stay safe. Walter and Gabe will keep you that way. So will the rest of the team. And when eight months are up, I’ll be right back here with you and the Wonder Kid in there.”
In the room behind them, Ralph flipped over onto his back and smiled. Tim was leaving, but he was right: Walter would take perfectly fine care of himself and his mother, and this time, he was going to make sure he didn’t mess it up.
