He remembers a warm Saint Patty’s much like this one. He remembers wearing the green and nursing his whiskey, hearing his students laugh and squeal and realizing they were falling in love. Most of all, he remembers wanting what he could not have -- but could’ve had had he simply allowed himself the pleasure. Emma would’ve gone with him in a heartbeat, and if they had ever acted on the bond between them, perhaps their days with Generation X would have ended differently. Perhaps their lives would’ve been different. Maybe he’d even still be alive.
But he had not allowed himself to act on his love any more than he’d allowed himself the luxury of disappearing back in Ireland when his home had called to him. He’d insisted on acting on honor, something he’d had very little of when he’d left her green shores, but just as Ireland had been a long way back, so had that young man been a long way back.
Perhaps he could’ve been happy, but he’d too long denied himself what he’d wanted most. Still he comes to her, but when he hears her whisper Scott’s name in her slumber instead of his, the Banshee wails.
