She shoves her hands deep into her uniform jacket as is her habit and pauses just before she can walk out the door. Her fingers press against something squishy, then wrap around it and bring it out. She stares in surprise at a packet of one of her favorite kinds of doughnuts, the little, round ones covered with powdered sugar. She looks up and sees Jody watching her from the doorway. “Jody-yo,” she starts, but her new partner in life and everything else cuts her off.
“I know why you don’t want to take the girls to the beach,” Jody tells her quietly, not wanting to disturb their charges, “but you need to realize we don’t care what you look like, Donna. You love your sweets, and that’s fine. We don’t mind, because we love you.”
Donna’s eyes water. “Ah, now, you’re gonna go and make me all teary-eyed.” She’d longed for so long to hear those same words from a guy, especially from Doug. She’d worked hard to lose weight and had forbidden herself so many of the things she loved for so long, but life is short. Life as a hunter is even shorter, even if it is the best one she’s known with Jody and the girls.
“What I’m saying is: come with us. Eat what you want. Wear what you want.” Jody comes to stand before her as she talks. “Love who you want. But come with us, wherever we go, whatever we’re doing.”
“Gosh darn it, I think you know the answer to that one by now!”
Jody grabs her beautiful, smiling, teary face in her hands. “I do.” She kisses her hard, and her kiss confirms what she’s already told her: She loves Donna, pounds and sweets and all, just the way she is.
