He used to believe that there would always be another day, another day in which to do right, another day in which to make the more difficult but correct choices, another day in which to put his Luthor genes further away from him. He used to believe he’d always have another chance. One smiling, beautiful boy taught him to believe that and in the possibilities of change and redemption.
It was that same smiling, beautiful boy who stole from him any chance he might have had of making those dreams a reality. Lex watches him as he laughs, talks, and walks along with his wife. He watches him from behind bars. He remains held captive as he flies free, always a sight of hope for those who view him, always running to rescue those who deserve his heroics.
Perhaps that was the problem, Lex thinks, settling in for yet another long night after watching Superman fly from behind the bars in his solitary window. Clark spoke of love and redemption for all, but there were clearly still a few who, even by the great Superman’s measures, did not deserve it. Of that small group, if nothing more, Lex was King.
