She wakes to warm sunshine on her face, blinks, and looks around her room. The house is quiet. Buffy must not have come home last night. She starts to move from her bed and stops as a hand reaches out and grips her wrist. “Faith!” Dawn cries out in surprise. Turning around, she beams down at her secret lover. “This is a first!”
Faith shrugs and grins mischievously up at her. “B didn’t come home last night,” she tells her. “No need for me to jump out of the window.”
Dawn slides back beside her underneath the sheet. “That’s never stopped you before.”
As she slides closer to her, Faith turns, presses the heels of her hands against Dawnie’s mattress, and rises above her. Faith waits until Dawn’s settled underneath to lean down and nip her neck with her teeth. “I never really had a reason to stay before,” she whispers against her flesh, “with anyone.”
“And you do now?” Dawn asks curiously.
Faith grins. “I like to think so.”
Dawn wraps her arms around her and brings her closer down to her. “I’d like to give you a reason to stay,” she says, barely stopping herself from saying the next words that come to her mind and heart but which she knows better than to let out her mouth -- at least not yet.
Faith staying with anyone after they’d made love is a first. It’s the third first she’s given Dawnie, having taken her virginity when Dawn had offered it to her and having returned to her time and again instead of maintaining her “one ride only” rule. She hopes with all her heart that there will be a fourth first for them -- that Faith will decide to not just stay because Buffy hasn’t come home but to stay with her always --, but she knows better than to ask her yet. If she says the words swelling in her heart, Dawn knows Faith will taking a running leap out her open window.
She knows to take what she’s offered and wait until Faith’s finally willing to give her more. After all, isn’t this -- Faith kissing her in the morning light -- something she’s only dreamed of until now? She can’t say the words. She can’t ask her not to leave her, not yet at least, but one day she will. She only hopes, when the time comes and she does say the words, that Faith will stay and not run back into the nighttime shadows which she’s made her home for so long now.
Faith’s face angles as she looks up at her from the breast she’s been suckling. She can feel her heart pounding rapidly underneath her. “Whatcha thinking, Dawnie?”
“I’m thinking,” she retorts, leaning down, “you just need to shut up and kiss me.”
Faith grins, broad, bright, and thoroughly happy for once. “That’s my girl,” she says and conquers her mouth and tongue with her own.
