He always knows the moment Clark’s been gone too long from Smallville. He doesn’t know how to explain it, but every time he feels the sensation of an invisible, aching hole in the land around him, he always learns very soon thereafter that his secret lover has been gone from home saving the whole world again. He emerges from his car, feeling the ache in his lungs. Even the air seems different in Clark’s absence. It’s not quite as hard to breathe as in the city smog, but it’s certainly not the clear, fresh air that he’s become used to, and spoiled by, in these wide, open areas.

“Missus Kent,” he calls, beaming brightly at Martha as he hurries to take a bag of groceries from her arms. Though helping her, he cuts quickly through the preamble. “How’s Clark?” he questions, barely managing to bite back the “where” he wants to ask rather than the “how”.

Martha smiles at him even as she wonders how on Earth this brilliant, young man always seems to know about her son’s inevitable departures. She glances around, wondering how much longer he’ll be away and how she can deceive Lex, though she doesn’t really want to, in believing everything is normal. “He’s fine,” she answers politely, realizing that, for them, this is normal.

“I came to talk to him about something he mentioned earlier, but I don’t see him.” Lex scans the farm.

“Oh, he should be back any moment now. He just ran to . . . to go do an errand, a couple of errands actually.” She hates lying to the boy who’s already been hurt by so many people in his life, including his family. “I made a pie last night. Would you like a piece?” she’s just asked when she spies a colorful dot in the distance.

Martha steps quickly in between Lex and the dot that she knows is her son, but not quickly enough to keep him from spying the movement. He smiles. “I would love a slice.” He beams down at her. “Why don’t you go on in and I’ll unload for you?”

Martha grins. She knows the real reason he’s in such a rush to go inside, but she lets him escort her inside, set her bag on the table, and go alone to get more. “Lex,” Clark greets him, stopping on his porch.

Lex can’t tell if Clark is truly surprised or just acting the part, but it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that he’s home again. His mother’s inside the kitchen, already putting away groceries, and Jonathan’s truck is gone. Lex figures wherever it is, he must be with it, because he didn’t come to help Martha or leer at him. He pulls Clark into his arms, breathes, “Welcome home,” against his lips, and kisses him long and deep, his heart and the surrounding land made whole once again. Clark doesn’t ask any questions; he just gives himself up wholly to Lex’s kiss and their love.
