She shudders, her eyes drifting closed in ecstasy, at the simple touch of his hand on her cheek. He draws his thumb softly across her flesh, and she shivers. But her shiver has nothing to do with the cold. “Come home,” he says in his soft, heavy, dark, whispering voice.
Her lips part. She wants to tell him that his home is not her home. She wants to tell him that things will be different this time. She wants to make things be different this time. She wants to listen and make real all the lies she’s told herself up until this moment that has come again. She wants to turn from him.
She wants to be stronger. She wants to be all those things she told herself she was. She wants to be of the night, not caring what happens to those in the daylight. She wants to be like a shadow, slipping through the city unnoticed and blatantly uncared for if noticed even by the ones, like him, who pretend otherwise. She wants to be a cat who needs no one. But even her babies need someone to love them, to curl up beside, to keep them safe and warm.
Her whole life is about keeping every cat she encounters safe, warm, and loved, but although they do what they can to return her love, she’s often still left feeling alone. He’ll leave her feeling that way again. Yet the word, “Yes,” is already tumbling from her lips just before he kisses away the rest of her sense. She does need him; she’s only human after all.
