“Really, B?” Faith asks, looking in disbelief at the black cat Buffy’s just thrown at her. She caught the thing instinctively, but now she looks down into the wide, marbled eyes of the stuffed animal and wonders about her partner. They can understand each other better than anybody else can begin to comprehend them, but right now, she’s not so sure she understands Buffy at all . . . or maybe she does understand her, Faith reflects, but she has no business darkening her soul with her own pain.
Buffy shrugs. “Want. Take. Have,” she reminds her.
“Yeah, but I mean, like, -- Why?” Faith finally asks.
“I . . . I thought you might like her,” Buffy admits after a moment. For some reason, sending the bin of stuffed animals in this particular store had reminded her of Kendra and the fact that she had never had a plushie before Buffy had given her. She had never had many good things in her short life, and Buffy’s willing to bet Faith’s has been the same, if not worse.
“You got her for me?” Faith questions disbelievingly.
“Yeah. Sure. Why not? I’ve still got a stuffed pig I like to sleep with some nights. It’s comforting.”
The radiant smile that finally breaks over Faith’s face is the most beautiful thing Buffy has ever seen. For one moment, she’s actually happy. “I’ll keep her then,” she says and actually hugs the plushie a little closer to her. “But tell Mister Piggie he’s going to have to move over when we get home.”
“His name’s Mister Gordo,” Buffy corrects with a wide grin.
Faith steps up to her. She doesn’t tease her for once. “Then tell Mister Gordo he’ll have to move.” She kisses Buffy long and deep. Buffy knows she won’t be sleeping with any stuffed animal tonight.
