She stands staring, through tears misting in her eyes, at the body of the woman she’s loved for most of her life. She’s shared more years with this remarkable woman than most lovers ever get. But the end has still come.
She’s always known it would, but she’s never thought she would stand here alone. She’s always thought she’d have someone to talk to: Joxer, Autolycus, Amarice, Aphrodite, even Ares . . . But now that Xena’s gone, Gabrielle is truly, utterly, completely alone.
That doesn’t change the facts, though. She lifts her wobbling chin and her tear-filled eyes to the setting sun. “I won’t say goodbye,” she whispers as she watches her lover’s body burn. Her fingers curl into fists. “I won’t say goodbye,” she repeats, “because this isn’t the end. I will see you again.”
But no one’s watching. No one’s there to see her resolve crumble. No one’s there to watch her fall on the ground and weep. No one’s there even when, days later, she pulls herself back together and pushes herself back to her feet. She looks on the pile of ash on the funeral pyre one last time and says yet again, “I won’t say goodbye.”
And she won’t. She won’t, because Xena is still with her. She can not see her now, can not feel her now, but she’s still there. She’ll always be there. Gabrielle turns toward the sun to start a new adventure, knowing her love is with her every step of the way.
