Love is blind. That’s what they say, at least, but Belle’s never felt it until her days spent in this foreboding castle with its dark, beastly master. She sees the beast every day and night. She sees the thick fur covering his body and tries not to think of how soft it feels every time they touch. She sees his horns, and though she knows their tips are sharp and dangerous, a part of her also thinks the way they curl is cute.
She sees the beast. She hears him roar, feels the castle shake with fear, but she sees, too, how he is in quiet times with his servants and how much they secretly adore him. She sees the gentility with which he lets the birds eat from his palms and witnessed before sorrow fill his eyes when they flew away from him.
Love isn’t blind, she realizes one day. It just lets you see what you might otherwise miss. It lets you see the truth behind what humanity is taught is wrong and evil. It opens your heart, and the truth is often a wonderful thing, just like the Beast’s fur really is very soft to her touch.
