She watches her when the whole world doesn’t know she’s looking. If someone does catch her staring at her, they’ll think she’s glaring at her with hatred or scheming on how she can get Harvey away from her, as though that doofus would ever be enough to keep a woman like herself interested.
Sabrina is an entirely different story. The girl shows up at the oddest times. At first, it was infuriating, but now, Libby almost looks forward to the moments when Sabrina will do her best to make her look bad, as if anyone ever could.
She’ll always win between them, but sometimes she wonders what could happen if they could both win. What if, for just once, she could stop impressing people? What if she could let Sabrina know she impresses her, that she recognizes she has the courage of a lion and the pluckiness like . . . Like nobody else.
That’s what truly makes Libby admire her the most: The girl never backs down. She takes everything Libby throws at her and still comes back. She never stops; sometimes, she actually comes close to making Libby look bad. It’s almost like magic.
Libby knows better than to believe in magic. Magic doesn’t exist any more than good girls being successful or a quiet, obedient daughter earning her parents’ attention. If you want to win in this world, you have to grab what you want. It’s too bad she can’t grab Sabrina; then they both might see some real magic.
