She has traveled across the world to claim her destiny. She has bested men far older, far more experienced, and far stronger than she, as a woman, will ever be. She has fought her way through armies and across lands, both known and unknown, to come here to this castle under the water.
Now she holds her head up high, ready to demand what is rightfully hers. The Sea King was a fool to ever make such an offer to man, but when Mulan heard of the tale and learned her father was about to set out to make their family rich and famous, her heart was rended. She’s fought all this way for more than her father, for more than her family, for more than herself even.
She’s endured all she has, because no woman should be forced by a man to take any mate not of her choosing. “I have come,” she announces, “for the Princess.”
The mermaid who went against her father’s wishes to join the land above struggles against her bonds. “I will never love you!”
The first thing anyone sees as Mulan lifts her helmet is a confident smile. “I never asked you to,” she says, shaking her hair out and looking at the redheaded mermaid. “If your father is a man of his word, you are now free.” She turns to walk away; after only a moment, as her bonds are snapped open, Ariel follows. Perhaps her destiny isn’t with a Prince after all.
