She hasn’t felt her in ages, not since she left on the ships with the big, white clouds that she had known would spell her granddaughter’s doom from the very moment she had first seen them on the horizon. Yet, suddenly, Grandmother Willow awakes, Pocahontas’ name on her withered lips for, after all this time, she feels her granddaughter again. Her ancient branches stretch out, trying, in vain, to reach beyond the sea, but she doesn’t have to reach. Her Pocahontas, at last, is coming home.
Her return is not as her Grandmother would’ve wished. It leaves her people, both back in England and here in America, grieving, but the animals are finally scampering out of hiding. They are happy as though Spring has returned. What they have instead is something far greater. Their Princess is home!
She races across their land again, once more as free as the wind. She runs with the deer, only now she runs faster than they. She finds the sweetest berries for the bear cubs and strokes every furry head in sight. She is home, never to leave again. The humans mourn, but they’ll never understand the true greatness of the Princess they’ve lost.
