Ororo's surprised to find herself alone for the first time in hours. There's always some mission or some other harrowing situation with which to deal with lately; it's rare she finds herself with more than five minutes with nobody else around. There's always someone who needs her, even if they don't actually voice that need, like Kitty, who's trying to protect her from having to take any form of leadership, or the new Wolverine in her life, who is just as stubborn and private as the one she'd loved before.
Sometimes, Ororo wonders if she's truly helping anyone, which is why times like these are so needed. Ororo closes her eyes and reaches into her mother. She reaches deep into the ground, anchoring herself with her, and reaches further still to the very center of life itself. She feels her heart and knows it's beating, feels the plants and animals racing along her face and recognizes they're still able to run because of herself and the countless times she and her friends, her family, have risked everything to save their world. They're still alive tonight because of them. For now, at least, that knowledge is enough to keep her going.
