Giles gasps sharply as he looks over Willow’s shoulder, his face turning quickly as red as her hair. Willow grins and moves slightly to the side so he can get a good look at the picture displaying on her laptop monitor. “That’ll teach you to spy on me.”
“I -- I -- I -- “ Giles pushes his spectacles back up onto the bridge of his nose. “I thought you might be looking for a new spell, so I thought it wise to -- “
“ -- to spy on me,” Willow finishes. “I get it, but remember there’s supposed to be this big, ole thing between us all called ‘trust’.”
“I trust you, Willow. I just don’t always trust your instincts to steer you right. You did ask me to help.”
“I did,” Willow relents, “and I know I wouldn’t have made it this far without you. You’ve kept me sane, Giles, or mostly sane at least. I doubt any of us could get away with claiming complete sanity.”
“Speaking of . . . insanity,” Giles wet his lips, clears his throat, and tries again, “I do not know how she managed to endure that being pierced.”
Willow shrugs and grins proudly. “This is Kennedy, my Kenn. She never claimed to be sane. She’s a wild one, as wild as Faith in her own way.” And she loves every bit of that wildness, that insanity, every bit that is her Kennedy. “And she’s beautiful, isn’t she?”
“Quite,” Giles agrees readily, although he swiftly looks away again, his cheeks once more coloring. “Although I do not know why she would trust the Internet with posting something so . . . private.”
“She sent it to me, only to me. You only happened to see it, because you were spying on me.”
“Lesson learned,” Rupert mutters, feeling ever older, “but isn’t she worried that . . . that someone might see it?”
“Come on. Like you’ve never had a girl send you a naughty picture before!”
“Not online!” Giles gasps.
Willow grins. “That’s my Kenn. She knows how to get to me, and she knows that nobody’s about to break through my firewalls.”
“Firewalls? Is that some kind of magical -- “
Willow almost rolls her eyes. “It’s nothing magical; it’s entirely tech. It’s like a barrier to keep the world from seeing what you don’t want to share with it.” She signs off and turns back to him, still grinning eagerly. “Now let’s get this mission over with so we can get back home and I can get back to enjoying what my girlfriend wants to share with me.”
She almost laughs as Rupert looks quickly away, his face still colored. He nods and leads the way, but he dares not glance back at her. He wonders if he’ll ever see the two girls the same way again, but even as he doubts he will, another part of him is glad that his young friend has such a beautiful, daring lady. Kennedy brings her happiness after all, and that, beyond all else, is what he wishes for all his cherished friends.
