Betty jumps as her mother's voice suddenly sounds behind her. "I haven't caught you staring at my old wedding dress since you were a child."
Betty releases the lace sleeve she's been fingering as she turns guiltily around. Her mother's smiling, but Betty doesn't dare meet her eyes.
"Who's the lucky boy?"
"Mom . . . What if it wasn't a boy?"
"What do you mean?"
"What if . . . What if I wanted somebody else to take my name, instead of taking theirs?"
"This is the modern day world, honey. Women keep their own name all the time now." Her mother gently sets down the basket of clothes she's been putting up. She steps closer. "But . . . But that's not exactly what you mean, is it?"
"What if," Betty asks in a rush of air, "the person I want to marry, the person I want to say 'I do' to, the person I love, isn't a guy, but a girl?"
Her mother seems to hold her breath. "As long as they make you happy," she says at last, "that's all that matters."
"Thank you! Thank you!" Betty hugs her mother tightly, then rushes to go tell Veronica the good news.
She stops in the hallway as her mother murmurs, "As long as it's not that horrible Veronica Lodge. She's been such a dreadful influence on you."
Betty sighs and slows her pace. One battle's won, but the war has yet to begin. Still, any battle will be worth the fight to say "I do" to Veronica.
