She finds her wrapped in leather and rocking slowly back and forth on his bed. "Dawn?" Buffy asks, her soft footsteps echoing in Spike's crypt as she approaches her sister.
"It's not fair," Dawn cries, her bottom lip trembling as she looks up at her sister. "It's not right! He saved the world -- "
"And they'll never know," Buffy agrees quietly. "I know. But you know why he saved it? He didn't save it for them. He saved it for us." She wraps her arms around her sister. "He saved the world so that we could live. He pushed me away from that ledge and took my place so I can stay here with you and keep protecting the world." She squeezes her tight, her own tears beginning at last to fall. "He never gave a bugger about the rest of the world. He died to save us."
"I know," Dawn agrees, and as she starts to weep, so, too, does her big sister.
Buffy buries her nose in Spike's jacket. It still smells like him, of his cigarettes and the air of danger that seemed to constantly lurk around him. She presses her face into its leather folds. "How'd you manage," she whispers curiously, "to get his jacket?" She could have sworn he was wearing it when he was turned to dust tonight.
"This is the last one," Dawn confesses, "the one he had before the one he was wearing tonight, the one that got ruined by the Demon blood -- "
"And you never let him get rid of it."
"No. I let him get rid of it. I just took it out of his trash and saved it. I . . . I thought we might want it one day."
Buffy takes her sister's hand in hers and squeezes it. "I've never been happy that you steal things," she confesses, "until now."
Dawn shrugs. "He would have given it to me if he'd thought I wanted it."
Buffy nods. "You're right," she agrees. "He would have. He gave us everything . . . "
" . . . including himself," Dawn whispers and, holding each other, they cry for the rest of the night. He saved their lives tonight, but his sacrifice broke their hearts forever more.
