Everything is quiet. There hasn't been the hum of the TV since he tucked Sammy into bed. There's not even a breeze to disturb the room, because he's got them locked up tight, just as he does every night. The only thing disturbing the peace is Dean's own mind, but when he looks over at his kid brother sleeping soundly, even his own thoughts stop.
Time seems to stand still as he stares at that little face. He was jumping all across the room earlier, begging him to let him go out and play on this hot, Summer night. He thought he'd never quiet. But now he has, and in the quiet, looking at that face, Dean can admit, even if only to himself, that his brother, not their father, is the reason he does all he does -- and also what makes this life worth living.
Jerk, Sam thinks, glowering at his brother's bed. Dean just had to jump in the way of the monster that attacked him. He had to save him yet again, forcing him to be the one tending his wounds and wondering when he'll wake.
Even in his frustration, he can't help a little half-smile as he glares at Dean's unconscious form. He knows why Dean pushed him out of the way. It's the same reason why Sam's mad at him now, and the same reason why Sam would prefer to be the one laying over there in that bed. It's the same reason why he's stayed on the hunt despite Jess, their dad, and everything else that's happened, the reason he knows they'll never really retire.
"Come on, man. Don't make me say it," he mutters, his words echoing in the hotel room. "Just open -- " He pauses, a grin spreading over his face as his brother opens his eyes and looks at him, and in those eyes, as he always does, he sees the reason why he does all he does. "'Bout time."
