Fighting down her own fears, Rachel stares into her younger girlfriend's wide eyes. She knows she can't let her know just how terrified she is, and she's glad she can't hear the pounding of her heart. It would definitely give her away.
Her eyes rake over Kitty's body. Her dearest friend looks the same as she always does. She doesn't look like a ghost, but for all intents and purposes, she might as well be! Once again, Rachel reminds herself of the brilliant minds who have gathered together to solve their dilemma. Reed Richards, Henry McCoy, Professor X, even Magneto . . . They're all discussing Kitty's predicament downstairs right now.
But Rachel's terrified they won't find an answer. She's scared her love will stay this way forever, never able to touch her again, never able to be touched by her . . . She blinks, forcing away her tears, but the look in Kitty's eyes tells her she already knows her thoughts.
"Easy, Red," Kitty whispers, leaning close. "It's okay." She stares straight up into her eyes, no tears showing in her own. "The Professor won't let me stay this way. You'll see. He'll figure out something."
Her fingers reach for her, and Rachel knows Kitty wants as desperately to touch her as she wants to touch her. Still, they both know they can't. Kitty leans closer still until Rachel swears she can feel her breath on her quivering mouth although she can not. Kitty keeps leaning in until her lips pass slowly through the corner of Rachel's open mouth.
Ray tingles. They can't touch, and yet it feels like Kitty's touching her deeper and more intimately than ever before. A few tears escape, but Ray smiles through them. "You're right," she whispers. "The Professor won't let this happen." Soon, they'll be kissing again, but she wonders if she'll ever feel a deeper intimacy than she does right now.
Kitty smiles and moves again, bringing a new sigh from Rachel. Let the brains figure it out, she thinks. She's got her Kitty, and that's all that really matters.
