Lex scans the back of the DVD with a frown. "Fluffy goodness," he mutters underneath his breath, his frown settling into a deeper scowl that makes the other patrons around him in one of the last remaining movie rental businesses quicken their step. The storyline of the disc he holds is utterly transparent. It's going to be full of romantic mush, animals, and children. In other words, it's the perfect movie to make Clark smile tonight.
Another title on the shelf catches Lex's eye. Tucking the one sleeve into the crook of his arm, he picks up the other movie and scans it. He arches a single eyebrow with interest. The tale is of a lone man who struggles to eek out his existence and get ahead in a world that seems bent on hating him. The tale sounds appealing, but Lex puts it back on the shelf. He has no time for movies unless Clark is with him. They're a waste of time otherwise.
Lex glances again at the movie he's selected. Lex already knows his mind will be elsewhere while the movie is playing tonight, mulling over debates in upcoming mergers and other matters at work. Even the war over in the Middle East will be preferable to being considered rather than this sappy tale.
But Clark, Lex knows, will bring him out of his reverie. His skin will slide along his as he reaches for the popcorn tub Lex will insist on holding, not because he likes the stuff that much himself -- Clark always eats far more of the buttery-laden kernels than Lex himself touches -- but because Lex won't have food dumped, and money wasted, on his floor. Besides, it gives the extra incentive for Clark to lean closer so he can get a good handful.
Clark will tear up when the film gets sappy, but then he'll need a shoulder and a comforting arm around his own. Lex will be able to hold him closer, and besides, movie time is always snuggle time. The movie's premise also tells Lex that it will certainly have a happy ending, leaving Clark glowing, grinning, and eager to explore far better uses of their time together.
Lex's scowl finally vanishes as he lays the movie on the check out counter. This is definitely the perfect movie for his boyfriend, and this place does still have its advantages after all. Glancing around with a sly smile that leaves everybody else guessing, as always, as to what the infamous Lex Luthor is thinking, Lex decides that he might just keep Smallville's rental store, and one of LuthorCorp's latest procured properties, going for a few more months -- at least until he manages to convince Clark to move in with him in Metropolis.
