Months after Gabrielle first joined Xena on her adventures, they lay together, their fingers interlinked as they hold hands beneath the stars. "Tell me a new one," Xena asks softly.
"Once upon a time, there was a beautiful Princess who was different from all the other Princesses. She was able to defeat anybody except for one person: She couldn't believe in herself."
Xena shifts uncomfortably.
"She wanted to give up and stop fighting, but her best friend wouldn't let her. So the Princess kept fighting and being the hero she was born to be, but she never could tell her friend exactly what she meant to her. Her silence came from her one fear: having her love not returned. So she died a hero but without ever doing the one thing that took the most courage. She never told her friend how she felt, so her friend never dared tell her she loved her too."
"She should have told her." A long moment of silence passes between them before Xena says softly, "I love you, Gabrielle."
She feels like singing when Gabby's answer comes as the story had promised but Xena had still doubted would happen, "I love you too."
