"See?" the little fish asks, wagging his fins in excitement. "I told you: it's the woman on the coin, that old coin that you keep with the rest of your treasures in the Cove."
Ariel surges in the water, using the waves to carry her a little above her best friend's head so she can see. It is indeed the beautiful woman whose image is engraved on the bronze coin she's kept for years, but the woman isn't alone. "You're right," she says, slipping gracefully back down into the water.
"Ariel?" Flounder frowns in concern. "Why don't you sound more excited?"
"She's with a guy, Flounder, and not just a guy but her husband." She pouts, having seen their matching rings. Her tail splashes the water and carries her quickly back underneath the sea.
Flounder catches up to her. "I didn't know they were married," he says, swimming next to her side.
"They always are," she answers sadly. She forces herself to brighten. "But that's okay. I learned my lesson about that world above." She pulls him closer to her in a hug. "They can keep their treasures. I'd rather have my friends."
On the ground above, Aladdin looks to his wife, who has stopped walking and is staring at the dark sea far below them. "Jasmine, is something wrong?"
"No," she answers but sounds distracted. He steps in beside her and peers down. She takes his arm in hers and resumes walking along the path of their royal duties. "It's nothing," she insists. Nothing, indeed, but a hint of the life she'd once wanted to lead and still would if she could truly do as she wishes. But a Princess with all the treasure in the world is still only a woman in invisible chains. She looks over at her best friend, thinking if she has to be condemned to a life without the love of a fair lady, at least she's condemned with him.
