He hadn't meant to fall asleep, but the sun was hot and the afternoon lazy. Chris himself is lazy, but he is tired. It's been a long week for his team of friends, himself included; when they hadn't been saving the whole town, they'd been saving each other, another friend, or just some random person who desperately needed their help. It seemed like they'd barely had a chance to sit down for a meal all week until today. Now here he is on Sunday afternoon, in between Josiah's sermons and full to overflowing with the meal Nettie and the other women provided for the church. It's no wonder he fell asleep when he took a moment's break from working on his fence to rest underneath the oak tree's shade.

It's stamping hooves that first stir him to consciousness, but Chris' eyes remain closed as he listens to the sound. Something is making his horse restless, but he doesn't hear any one approaching. Everything's quiet -- too quiet, Chris suddenly realizes, his green eyes snapping open and alert. Even the birds have stopped singing.

He looks around, not seeing anything unusual at first. There still isn't a cloud in the sky, but his horse is stomping mad about something. He starts to move toward him and freezes when he hears the telltale sound of rattlers shaking. Swallowing down the tightness that suddenly rises in his throat, Chris moves only his eyes toward the sound. His gaze meets with the snake's as the animal rears up, preparing to strike.

A bullet blazes through the snake's head, shattering the reptile into pieces, just before it can strike. Chris looks up, his lips forming into a small smile as he looks above the smoke of the mare's leg to the man he knew he'd see as soon as he'd killed the snake. Vin tips his hat to him as their eyes meet. "Moment longer," he drawls, "an' that snake would've hypnotised ya."

Chris doesn't deny it; it's well known in these parts that snakes tend to hypnotise their prey before striking. Meeting their reptilian eyes can easily prove to be fatal, but right now Chris' eyes are focused on another set. He's noticed many times before just how blue Vin's eyes are, bluer than the cloudless stretching high above their heads, but their beauty never ceases to catch him in awe. He knows he could easily be hypnotised by them as well.

Vin smiles, his eyes not moving from Chris'. "Lucky I came along when I did."

"Yeah," Chris replies, nodding. "Lucky." He is lucky that Vin had come when he did, but he's also lucky just to have the man as a friend.

Vin jerks his head toward the fence. "Want some help with that, pard?"

"Maybe. First I think there's something in the cabin I wanna show ya." He rolls to his feet and leads the way into the home they've been working on building together. Vin's been helping him every step of the way where Chris has allowed him, but what he hasn't said -- what he won't voice until the building's completed and only then if he's still got him in his life -- is that he plans on inviting Vin to stay not just whenever the range gets too lonely but on a more permanent basis. It may only be one room, but it's more space than he'll ever need away from the tracker.

Chris steps in and waits for Vin to shut the door behind them. "What did you want to show me?" Vin murmurs, grinning almost as though he already knows.

Chris smiles. He probably does. The man's the only one other than Buck who can read his every move, but Chris doesn't care. Vin's been able to read him since the very first day they met and saved Nathan from that posse, but he's been looking to make that kind of connection again for years. Sometimes, he thinks they're even more deeply connected than he and Buck were back in the day.

He reaches out to him now, takes his hand in his, and threads their fingers together. "This," he whispers and draws him close into his embrace and his waiting kiss. He's lucky indeed to have Vin in his life, and he's not going to miss another moment they can spend together again.

The End
