Lex glances over at his husband with a sly smile curving his lips. He would have had to blindfold any one else to keep them from peeking, but his Clark has always been a man of his word. The sudden sound of a soft snore startles the multimillionaire, but his smile grows even fonder as he realizes his husband has fallen asleep.
He settles into the drive, his mind thinking back to last night. Last night on their bed covered with silk sheets and red roses was every bit as fun and memorable as he had intended to be, and today, he knows, will be even better.
They've left the city behind for a good hour when he realizes that Clark is no longer snoring. He glances to him. He's sitting up again, his eyes still tightly closed.
"Lex?" Clark asks.
Lex's smile arches even further upward as he glances around at the passing scenery. "I suppose you can open your eyes now, Clark," he speaks teasingly, but Clark's bright blue eyes open in a flash.
He gasps in delighted surprise as he realizes where they are. "I -- I thought you said you had to work?"
"Do you really think I would allow our anniversary to slip by while I was at the office?"
"But you . . . you . . . " Clark fumbles for words. "Yesterday was technically our anniversary."
"No, it wasn't," Lex says with a shake of his head. Clark looks at him, dumbfounded. "When I realized you had your days mixed up last week, I admit I took advantage. I quickly had all our calendars and devices changed to the date you thought it was. You were only on that alien world last week, Clark, for two days, not three." His smile turns sly as he glances at him again.
"So you . . . You . . . Wow!" He's used to Lex making things complicated and his genius mind inventing all sorts of twists for him to have to untangle as Superman, but he definitely hadn't expected this! "That's a lot of trouble to go to, sweetheart, just to surprise me."
Lex beams. "Every bit of it was well worth it."
Clark notices his planner laying between them in the front seat, grabs it, and flips to the date of their anniversary. "But all these meetings you had scheduled for today!"
"I had every one of them moved."
"Every one of them?"
"Every one of them. It's one of the advantages," he smirks, "to running your own company."
"Wow . . . "
"So why don't you settle back for the ride to your parents' house, love?"
"Mom and Dad know?"
Lex's smile turns sly again. "Of course."
"But they didn't say a word!"
"I asked them not to."
"How long can we stay?"
"As long as you want to."
"But your plans -- "
"Mean nothing if you're not happy." Lex tosses his schedule out of the window. As he watches it pages fluttering behind them in the rearview mirror, he's assured by the knowledge that he has five other copies and that Superman always leaves eventually to save the world.
