She's been pacing inside while the storm's been roaring about outdoors for the last several hours. She finally turned her pacing into exercise and has still gotten a good number of miles underneath her feet. She hates storms like this one where the thunder's so loud it seems to shake the very equipment underneath her feet. It reminds her too much of when she had to cower and hide with the other Hounds, and when she had to hunt her own people in such storms.

She wonders, not for the first time, if she'd do it again now if she was faced with another decisions. Would she be strong enough to take her own life to keep from becoming the enemy's tool? Could she kill herself rather than bring so many of her own people to their slow and excruciating deaths? Could she do what was right? Rachel doesn't know. She doesn't have any answers for herself back then or now when she's finally supposed to be free of the nightmare but still sees herself hunting down her people and enduring Ahab's punishments every time she shuts her eyes.

She's lost in reverie when the younger, more innocent, and, she thinks, beautiful face suddenly appears directly in front of hers. Kitty grins at her from the controls of her elliptical machine, her grin only growing wider when Rachel gives a small shriek. "Pryde!" she scolds as the machine comes to an abrupt, sputtering stop. "I could've hit you!"

Kitty winks playfully at her. "Not in this form, Red. You know that." She steps onto the bike in front of her and solidifies her molecules. "Now," she challenges teasingly, "hit me with your best shot."

She could. She could easily turn this into a practice session for them both that would last another several hours, but Rachel's tired of fighting. Her weariness goes straight pass her bones into her very soul, and Kitty Pryde has always been her light in her darkest times. "Pryde," she says, just barely stopping herself from calling her Kate, "come here."

Kitty beams at her as she obliges. Ray wraps her arms around her as another rumble of thunder rolls through the lighthouse. Sometimes, the redhead wonders how bright they were to choose this place as their new headquarters, but where they live at doesn't really matters. What matters is that they do live. This isn't the time from whence she came. Her life is no longer a nightmare, and she's got this beautiful girl, who isn't married to their friend, Piotr, with whom to share it.

She mentally shoves her nightmarish memories aside again. She can't stay focused in the past. If she does, she'll never live, and Ahab will still win. So instead she ravishes Kitty's lips with gentility, pleasure, and passion, and her young girlfriend's happy moans slowly drown out the thunder and the screams in her mind and truly make her smile again. Yes, indeed, Kitty Pryde is her light, and she's lucky to have her.

The End
