She doesn't like for her sister to surf. It's one of the many dangerous things her younger sibling adores, but Nani would rather have her chasing after aliens than chasing the tides. She never tells her why, which makes Lilo angry, but she doesn't have the words to tell her of what happened to her when she was younger.

Lilo's sixteen before one evening, after her sister has thrown at her that she used to love surfing, Nani finally admits, "Surfing wasn't the only thing I loved! I lost my heart in it!"

Lilo stares at her sister. "What . . . What do you mean?" she finally asks, sitting down beside her again.

"I met some one one day," Nani with a sigh, looking away from her sister and back out toward the water. The waves are perfect for a little night time surfing, but she won't set one toe back into those tides ever again. "She was different . . . " Her voice trails off again. "Beautiful . . . "

"Like Stitch? Not the beautiful part, but the different."

"Kinda. She . . . She was . . . " She looks away again. "You'll laugh. Forget it. I shouldn't have said anything."

"No. I want to know. I promise I won't laugh."

Nani sighs. "She was a mermaid, Lilo. Legend says those who do not help like to drown humans. But she was different. She didn't drown me. She only took my heart."

Lilo reaches across the distance and holds her sister's hand as she cries.

She walks along the shore and stops to wriggle her toes in the surf. The seagulls cry out, but it's not their voices she hears rising above the tide. It's the high-pitched shrill of girlhood laughter.

She looks out over the ocean and twists the ring on her finger. Today is the day. She should be happy. She's not. If she could only spy a green tail rising out of the waves, she'd call off everything.

Nani sighs. But it's not to be. Ariel might as well be a figment of her imagination. She's not going to show up again today. She hasn't appeared a single time to her since that crab caught them kissing, and today will be no different.

Nani turns from the beautiful ocean before her, tears in her dark eyes. She holds her head high, her goal now resolute. She will marry David today, give Lilo a father figure, and put the dreams of her girlhood, long before her parents died, far away.

They might as well be, because Ariel, the mermaid she'd once dreamed she'd marry, is surely far, far away. She won't be returning regardless, and Nani won't live the rest of her life without love. David loves her, even if she can't love him the way he desires and deserves. He'll be good to her, to Lilo, and the rest of their ohana. Walking away, she never sees the crying face in the wave or the hand reaching out for her too late.

The End
