"It's time you let him go."
"What?" Riley asks in surprise, blinking like she doesn't understand, but this conversation's been coming a long time. She's let her play with her boy for far too long, but they're grown up now. It's time to put the toys of the past away.
"I love you, Riley," she says determinedly, gazing into her eyes. Her best friend really has grown up into a beautiful woman. She knows she's not the only one who sees it. She sees the looks they get every time they go out, and despite what Riley thinks, Maya knows they're not all looking at her.
"But," she continues, taking a breath, "I'm not going to continue to live my life like this. Not as a lie. We don't need Lucas. We're not a triangle. You don't really love him, but he's comforting. He's reassuring. He's a pretty toy you can show off to your parents and use to keep them from asking questions about us."
Riley's gasping for breath now. She's hyperventilating again, but Maya's not going to back down this time. She needs her. She loves her, but she's a selfish person. She needs her to herself. She won't share her with that boy any longer. She shrugs. "And besides, your mother already knows and your father will come around to it. To us."
"You've got to choose." Maya takes a step toward the door, turns her back on her. "Me or him."
"Y-You," Riley gasps. "It's always been you."
